The side that lowers is quiet and can be operated and lowered with one hand. The mechanism for rising and lowering are plastic so it is not squeaky like the old metal rods that were on my first crib with my older children. You push in the actual side rail with your foot and the rail lowers. Very nice value.

This is our second jenny lind crib. Simple, classic, always looks great. We bought a second one since we weren't ready to put the 2 year old in a bed. He loves it.
